Bill Sheffield Alaska Railroad Depot

Alaska Railroad Corporation
Ted Stevens International Airport, Anchorage, AK
ARRC approached the team to design a building that would be their signature depot in the state. The team proposed a modern look to a traditional railroad depot. The project included an elevated track leading to a 300’ covered passenger platform with a 3-story, 2-level passenger terminal. The building provides assembly space for 250 people and has pedestrian flow into a subterranean tunnel that leads to the main airport facility. The mechanical and electrical design included a separate heating plant, cooling plant, standby generator, communications system, intercom, CCTV, and custom designed northern lights display in the tunnel. This project came in under budget and on time.
unique challenges/solutions
Owner requested a northern lights display in the tunnel connecting the rail station to the airport.

RSA’s lighting team designed a one-of-a-kind ceiling-mounted fiber optic illuminated display using curved, sandblasted acrylic panels.
