Alaska Psychiatric Institute New Facility

State of Alaska
Anchorage, Alaska
RSA Engineering, Inc. provided mechanical and electrical design services for a new 176-bed psychiatric facility under a design/build contract. The design includes a door access system with proximity sensor card readers; electronic and magnetic door locks; CCTV observation of protected doors; intercom functions at selected door; and door position monitoring devices. Other elements include the winter garden entryway, meditation room, nurse call system, and bulletproof windows.
unique challenges/solutions
The initial design-bid project by another design firm came in over budget, so the state approached our designers to team up with a contractor to bring the project back within budget. One of the challenges was to allow maintenance staff to access equipment throughout the facility without disturbing the patients."
Unique Solutions: "Working hand-in-hand with the contractor and the owner, RSA incorporated state-of-the-art mechanical and electrical systems while staying within the budget constraints. We aided maintenance staff by working with the architect to create a mezzanine level above the corridors, allowing maintenance crews to do the majority of their work above the patients.
